There is no strike in bass fishing more violent than a topwater explosion. One second the surface is calm — the next, a bass erupts from below and annihilates your bait. That moment is exactly what the Lanier Lures Hunter Series was built to create. They see it. They come up. They eat.
The Hunter Series is a topwater lure built to disrupt the surface and provoke violent reaction strikes. From subtle walks to aggressive pops, this bait creates the perfect disturbance to bring predators up and make them commit. Make noise. Create chaos. Get explosions.
What Makes the Hunter Series Different
The Hunter's tight action and balanced design create a realistic topwater presentation that pushes water and calls fish up from below. Five features make it stand out:
- Surface disturbance triggers ambush strikes — the Hunter's action mimics a struggling baitfish on the surface, activating the predator instinct in bass holding below
- Versatile action: walk, pop, pause — one bait, multiple presentations, adaptable to whatever the fish want on any given day
- Realistic profile and high-visibility colors — looks like real forage from below while remaining visible to the angler above the surface
- Premium hooks built for big fish — topwater strikes are explosive and violent; the Hunter's hooks are built to handle the impact and hold through the fight
- Ideal for topwater presentations — balanced weighting and action tuned specifically for surface fishing, not an afterthought
Best Conditions for the Hunter Series
Topwater fishing has a reputation for being a dawn-and-dusk game — and while those windows are prime, the Hunter Series produces in a wider range of conditions than most anglers realize:
- Low light — dawn and dusk — the classic topwater window. Bass move shallow to feed aggressively during low-light periods, and the Hunter's surface disturbance is impossible to resist
- Calm or light wind — a glassy or lightly rippled surface lets the Hunter's action shine and makes the disturbance visible to bass from a distance
- Shallow water — bass holding in 1–6 feet of water are primed for topwater. Grass flats, dock edges, and shallow points are prime Hunter territory
- Active feeding fish — when bass are chasing baitfish on the surface or busting in open water, the Hunter matches the chaos perfectly
- Warm water — water temperatures above 65°F put bass in an aggressive, surface-oriented feeding mode. Summer mornings and evenings are peak Hunter season
Four Retrieves That Trigger Explosions
The Hunter Series is most effective when you vary your retrieve until you find what the fish want. Here are the four presentations to master:
1. Walk the Dog
The signature topwater retrieve. Use rhythmic, downward rod tip twitches to make the Hunter dart side to side across the surface with pauses in between. This zigzag action mimics a wounded or disoriented baitfish and is one of the most effective topwater presentations ever developed. Work it over open water, along grass edges, and past dock corners.
2. Pop and Pause
A sharp upward rod tip pop pushes water and creates a loud splash, then let the Hunter sit completely still. The pop gets attention from a distance; the pause gives the fish time to come up and commit. This retrieve is deadly when bass are holding just below the surface but not actively chasing — the pause triggers the strike.
3. Pause and Watch
Cast the Hunter out and let it sit completely motionless — dead stick it for reaction strikes. This is the most patient topwater technique, but it's devastatingly effective on pressured fish and during post-front conditions when bass are reluctant to chase. Watch your line and the bait closely; strikes on a dead-sticked topwater are often subtle before they're explosive.
4. Speed Up
When bass are actively feeding and chasing baitfish on the surface, burn the Hunter across the water fast. Aggressive, feeding fish will chase it down. This retrieve works best during feeding frenzies, in the fall when bass are chasing shad, and during the first few minutes of first light when bass are in full ambush mode.
Where to Throw the Hunter Series
The Hunter Series shines anywhere bass are relating to the surface or shallow water. Target grass flats and pad fields at dawn, dock edges and boat lanes during low-light periods, points and coves where baitfish school in the fall, and open water over submerged structure when bass are busting on top. If you see birds diving or baitfish skipping on the surface, tie on a Hunter immediately.
Gear Setup for Topwater Fishing
Getting your gear right makes a big difference with topwater presentations. A 7'–7'3" medium to medium-heavy casting rod with a soft tip gives you the control needed for walking and popping without pulling the bait away from striking fish. Use 15–17 lb monofilament or fluorocarbon — mono's stretch helps absorb the shock of explosive topwater strikes and keeps fish pinned. A 6.3:1 to 7.1:1 gear ratio reel gives you the speed to burn when needed and the control to walk the dog precisely.
Five Series. One Mission.
The Hunter Series is one of five purpose-built lineups in the Lanier Lures family, each designed for a specific fishing style:
- Reaper Series — Reaction. Trigger the strike.
- Drifter Series — Natural movement. Let it flow.
- Stalker Series — Bottom contact. Hunt them down.
- Hunter Series — Surface ambush. Bring them up.
- Trophy Series — Trophy pursuit. Chase greatness.
When the conditions are right and bass are looking up, nothing beats a topwater explosion. The Hunter Series was built for that moment.
